Private Air Terminal, Riyadh
ATKINS - (budget undisclosed)
Strategic and architectural design services for a 4-stage feasibility study for the provision of a private air terminal at Riyadh Airport on behalf of ATKINS. The studies concluded with the recommendation to pursue development of a shallow, semi-monocoque two-storey structure which only gave away its presence from the main terminal building 2km across the desert site when sunlight periodically reflected off the low roof. The proposals also incorporated open, monocoque aircraft hangers to provide solar shading to passengers as they moved between aircraft and terminal vehicles, and extensive hard and soft landscaping to the surrounding site.
The project was undertaken in collaboration with Simon Brown Architects Ltd.
